- Certified nursing assistants/nurses’ aides who assist with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, grooming, meal preparation, shopping, and laundry or provide respite care
- Skilled Nursing Care
- Wound care
- Diabetes education
- Medication management
- Drawing blood
- Cardiac & pulmonary disease management, etc.
- Therapy
- Physical therapy including home safety evaluations, mobility assistance, strength training, etc.
- Occupational therapy including adapting and retraining for daily living skills
- Speech therapy including working with speech/language deficiencies and evaluation and retraining of swallowing techniques
- Social Services
- Short-term therapy to cope with illnesses and community resource planning
How is eligibility for home health care determined?
- Attendant/Custodial Care
- There are no eligibility requirements. Any patient, family member or healthcare professional can arrange for custodial care services.
- Skilled Nursing Care
- Homebound patients covered by Medicare & Medi-Cal insurance must have skilled nursing care services ordered by a physician who certifies that the recipient qualifies for such services.
- Eligibility for patients covered by an HMO is determined by the insurance case manager. Private physicians and/or case managers order services for private insurance or PPO patients.
How are home care services paid for?
- Attendant/Custodial Care
- These home care services are primarily paid for by the patient or other responsible party.
- Exceptions: Individuals who are covered by long-term insurance; workers who have been injured on the job and have approval from a worker’s compensation insurance company; recipients of local or state funded programs.
- Skilled Nursing Care
- Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMO, PPO, private insurance, or worker’s compensation insurance.
